Palma Cathedral (La Seu)

Tourist Attraction in Palma, Majorca

The Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma, known more commonly La Seu, is a Gothic Roman Catholic cathedral which dominates the landscape of Palma, Majorca's capital city.

The cathedral was built over four centuries on the site of a pre-existing Arab mosque.

Work to construct the cathedral began in 1229 under the instruction of King Jaime I, and was finally completed in 1601, although there have been additions, changes and repairs since then.

The striking cathedral is built mainly in Catalan Gothic style, however with building work lasting well over 400 years with various contributors, the building has a number of features from a range of other Eurpean architectural styles. The result is a beautiful and impressive cathedral, which looks over the entire city from an elevated position, and is a memorable symbol of Mallorca and the whole of the Balearic Islands.
