Cap de Formentor is an area of outstanding natural beauty - on the very tip of Formentor, a wild, rocky peninsula on the north-east of Majorca. For stunning location and breathtaking views, Cap de Formentor is the place.
Offering spectacular views for miles around, the Cap de Formentor is famed for it's breathtaking scenery and landscape. On clear days the views can extend as far as Menorca, some 65km (about 40 miles) away. The famous lighthouse of Cape Formentor adds to the drama of the setting.
Situated about 20km (about 13 miles) away from Puerto Pollensa, the drive along the peninsula can be daunting or fun - depending on how you feel about winding cliffside roads and hairpin bends! Some people report that they find the drive a little scary, but for most it is an exhilarating journey, and all part of the experience. There are several viewing points along the way so you have an opportunity to stop and take a breather as you go along, and say Hola to the goats!
Formentor has dramatic cliffs that rise to 120 metres (about 400ft) above the exquisite blue sea, home to nesting seabirds and a variety of rare and protected plants. The landscape is quite breathtaking and interesting, with odd-looking rock formations and pine trees that grow between rocks at strange angles!
At Cap de Formentor there is also a very beautiful, small sandy beach. Picture postcard perfect, with clean white sand and shallow clear waters, the beach is set in a little sunny cove. The beach is quite narrow, and the sand is moist and ideal for sandcastles - it's a great place to take children with buckets and spades.
At the end of the beach is the only hotel on the peninsula: the stylish Formentor Hotel, which has been offering luxury accommodation to the rich and famous since 1929.
The Cap de Formentor does get extremely busy - especially in high season - and there are regular coachloads of day-trippers arriving throughout the day. For the best experience, it is recommended to go early in the day, or out of the peak holiday season. Then you can take your time, walk along the rocks and savour the amazing location without jostling for space amongst the crowds!
The best way to get to Cap de Formentor is to drive yourself - partly so that you can enjoy the twisty mountain road at your own pace, and partly so that you can go early and avoid the crowds that start to build up by mid-morning. Parking spaces at the lighthouse (the end of the road) are very limited though - another reason to go early!
Other facilities at Cap de Formentor: a restaurant and bar, public toilets and a souvenir shop.
