Alaro Castle - AlaroAlaro Castle - Alaro Map

Alaro Castle is an ancient, partially-ruined castle perched upon a mountain - more of a rocky outcrop - called Puig D'Alaro.

Set in an area of breathtaking natural beauty, with woodlands and olive trees all around, the castle is some 820m above sea level, deep in the countryside of Majorca.

The castle has been around since the 15th century, although there has been some kind of fortification in that site since Moorish times (10th century), and has a colourful history - it's the subject of many legends and tales.

To visit Alaro castle you must first conquer the Puig D'Alaro - a steep climb, but worth the effort if you are fit enough. Starting in Alaro town, head for the 'Orient Valley', where you will see a road leading up the hill. It's a very pleasant walk with lovely views and scents as you ascend. Halfway up the mountain is a small car parking area, the last place you can drive to - from here you must walk the remainder of the way. There is also a restaurant here, Es Verger, excellent for stopping of for refreshments halfway down (or halfway up!)

From the top, the panoramic views are something to behold, stretching over the plains as far as Palma, and Alcudia in the other direction. From here you can have a magnificent view of the Serra de Tramunta mountain range, much of the island and out to sea.

Here you will also find a small chapel, a hostel and a retreat - Hermitage of the Mare de Du del Refugi, all of which were built within the castle grounds in the 17th century.
